Michael, Irmengard and Tobi Deinlein have been producing award-winning spirits and liqueurs in Tauranga for donkeys years. German precision meeting Kiwi ingenuity. And some spectacular local fruit.

It’s a fabulous combination, but there’s always been a guilty little secret. You see, these particular Germans have a broad streak of Italian heritage in their family. Definitely not the sort of thing that would ever be mentioned in polite Bavarian society. But since they’ve been based here in New Zealand for the last twenty years, it was bound to come out sometime. Life’s just so much more relaxed here, after all.

When faced with a tonne or so of gorgeously scented Bay of Plenty lemons last year, that Italian heritage finally burst forth, but with a distinctly New Zealand angle. The result was Lemon:Cello, a lighter take on traditional limoncello, with more of the fresh lemon flavour, but a little less kick. A zingy alternative to a white wine spritzer, and a crisp new flavour to mix in smart, summer cocktail.
